How to care for your Christmas tree

Five simple steps keep a fresh-cut tree green and drinking all season.

Five steps to a fresh tree

  1. Make a fresh cut. Just before the tree goes in the stand, cut at least 1 inch off the bottom of the trunk. A cut tree seals itself with sap. A fresh cut opens it up so it can drink. At the lot, we do this for you.
  2. Keep it away from heat. Fireplaces, space heaters, wood stoves, sunny windows and air vents all dry a tree out. The cooler the room, the longer it stays fresh.
  3. Water it right away. Set the tree in a stand that holds at least one gallon, and fill it with warm water. Skip the sugar and other additives. There is no proof they help.
  4. Check the water every day. Never let the water drop below the cut, or the trunk seals again and stops drinking. A tree can drink a gallon on its first day, so check often at first.
  5. Wait 2 to 3 days to decorate. Let the tree stand in water for a few days first. The branches settle into their natural shape.

Tree care questions

When should I water my tree?

Right away. Add at least one gallon as soon as the tree is steady in its stand.

Should I add aspirin, sugar or soda to the water?

No. There is no proof that additives keep a tree fresh longer. Use plain water, warm if you can.

How do I keep my tree from drying out?

Make a fresh cut, keep the stand full, and keep the tree away from heat. In Florida, a window that is not well insulated can heat a tree too, so keep it back from the glass.

Can I give my tree too much water?

No. A tree drinks what it needs and stops. You cannot overwater it.

Can I plant my tree after Christmas?

No. We sell cut trees, and a cut tree will not grow roots again.

Do you sell tree stands?

Yes. We have stands for every size, from tabletop trees up to 20 ft. Add one to your order.

What kind of trees do you sell?

Only Fraser firs, for their smell, shape and strong needle hold.

Do you deliver?

Start with a fresh tree. We make the cut for you at the lot.
